Photometric observationsof the radio bright B[e]/X-ray binary CI Cam

چکیده

We present multiwavelength (optical, IR, radio) observations of CI Cam, the optical counterpart to the transient X-ray source XTE J0421+560. Pre-outburst quiescent observations reveal the presence of a dusty envelope around the system. Pronounced short term variability is observed at all wavebands from U–K, but no indication of prior flaring of a similar magnitude to the 1998 April outburst is found in these data. Data obtained during the 1998 April X-ray flare reveal pronounced optical-radio flaring. The optical flux was observed to quickly return to quiescent levels, while the radio flare was of much longer duration. The optical component is likely to result from a combination of free–free/free–bound emission, emission line and thermal dust emission, caused by re-radiation of the Xray flux, while the behaviour of the multiwavelength radio data is consistent with emission from expanding ejecta emitting via the synchrotron mechanism. Post-outburst (1998 August–1999 March) U–M broadband photometric observations reveal that while the optical (UBV ) flux remains at pre-outburst quiescent levels, near IR (JHKLM ) fluxes exceed the pre-outburst fluxes by ∼0.5 magnitudes. Modelling the preand post-outburst spectral energy distribution of CI Cam reveals that the structure and/or composition of the dusty component of the circumstellar envelope appears to have changed. Due to a lack of information on the precise chemical composition of the dust within the system several explanations for this behaviour are possible, such as the producSend offprint requests to: J.S. Near IR spectroscopy of candidate B[e]/X-ray binaries

We present near IR spectra (0.8–2.5μm) of the two candidate B[e]/X-ray binary systems CI Cam/XTE J0421+560 and HD34921/1H 0521+37. The spectra of both systems show evidence for a more complex circumstellar environment than those seen in classical Be/X-ray binaries. Strong H i and He i emission is seen, confirming the presence of a dense circumstellar wind; O i, Fe ii and [Fe ii] emission in CI ...

On the radio emitting high mass X-ray binary LS 5039

We present new optical – near–IR spectroscopic and photometric observations of the newly discovered galactic microquasar LS 5039, which indicate a classification for the mass donor in the system of O6.5V((f)). Optical spectroscopy and photometry shows no variability over a timescale of years, and we find no evidence of modulation by, or emission from the compact companion in these data. However...

We obtained high dispersion spectroscopy of CI Cam, the optical counterpart of XTE J0421+560, two weeks after the peak of its short outburst in 1998 April. The optical counterpart is a supergiant B[e] star that is emitting a two-component wind, a cool, low-velocity wind and a hot, high-velocity wind. The cool wind, which is the source of narrow emission lines of neutral and ionized metals, has ...

On the peak radio and X-ray emission from neutron star and black hole candidate X-ray transients

We have compiled and analysed reports from the literature of (quasi-)simultaneous observations of X-ray transients at radio and X-ray wavelengths and compared them with each other and with more unusual radio-bright sources such as Cygnus X-3, GRS 1915+105 and Circinus X-1. There exists a significant (> 97% likelihood) positive (rank) correlation between the peak X-ray flux PX and radio flux den...
